I am finding it very frustrating to have to hunt and peck to find out how much I have backed for, particularly for projects that include a lot of add ons.

It very much depends on the creator. Some are very open to suggestions from backers and appreciate an experienced backer providing feedback. Others do not want to hear from us ever.
