Over six months in the making, our signature Air-Knit™ fabric has reached one of the highest ecological standards in the world, while performance knitted to provide a set of unique functions and benefits that will help you go further. Developed in Taiwan, a country best known for its technical capabilities.
Not only is our fabric high-performance, but it is healthier for you and the planet, period. We use the same raw material (polyester) found in all sportswear, but instead of using non-renewable oil (dirty!) to produce, our polyester comes from plastic water bottles, saving a tonne of energy instead of polluting the outdoors. On top of that, each tee helps divert 8-10 bottles from entering into our oceans.
Regenerated polyester yarn is naturally hydrophobic- meaning it doesn't really like water that much, and won't absorb moisture as much as natural fibers such as cotton, for example. It is one of the reasons why we chose this yarn to engineer our Air-Knit™ fabric with. It provides an essential foundation for functional qualities such as quick-dry, moisture wicking and lightweight to develop. The difference with ours is we took this baseline of functionalities and elevated it to a whole new level regarding performance and sustainability. Regenerated polyester yarn can also be recycled again and again with no degradation of quality, allowing us to minimize wastage. This means our shirts could potentially become a closed loop system if the shirts are recycled after their use.
Polygiene® is the best performing and most eco-friendly anti-odor finish there is today. It is Bluesign® approved (the highest ecological standard of fabric production), and a treated garment can be recycled. This all means better gear for you and the planet- giving you more free time and longer lasting equipment without compromising the outdoors.
The Bluesign® system is today's leading solution for sustainable textile production. It takes on a holistic approach throughout the entire supply chain, from the very beginning of the manufacturing process, and sets and controls standards for an environmentally friendly and safe production. Our fabric is certified as Bluesign® approved, ensuring it has been made to the highest and cleanest standard in the textile industry.
Because of our featherweight fabric, our shirts can pack up efficiently into any packing cubes, saving more space and weight for other travel essentials. Here, we were able to fit 4 (could of probably squeeze in one more!) of our shirts along with only one pair of shorts and socks.
If you are unsure about your size, we would love to help find that perfect fit, e-mail [email protected] and we'll take care of the rest. =)
WRAP is an independent, objective, non-profit team of global social compliance experts dedicated to promoting safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing around the world through certification and education. All our shirts are made in a WRAP certified factory in Vietnam, ensuring our values are met throughout the production process, from start to finish.
For the past year, we dove deep into the R&D phase to really figure out how to micro-improve on all the features in our shirts- from finding new ways of knitting our fabric, developing a super soft, stretchy and strong seam, to using an innovative printing method for our neck labels. Below are some of the things we designed into our Regenerative Tees:
For all the technical shirts out there with 'Moisture Wicking' capability, we wanted to see for ourselves just how quick and effective these fabrics wick away moisture, and analyze how the moisture is being absorbed into the materials. To ensure the tests are carried out as neutral as possible, we had some requirements:
In all of the tests we carried out, we realized a few things:
Upon discovering the above, we decided to see if we can find a way to set a different standard in the term 'moisture wicking,' and sure enough, we did just that. We are calling it 3D Wicking.
Our fabric has an innovative way of transporting water from the inside of the material (skin side) to the outside (face side). To keep it short, we essentially engineered the skin side of the fabric differently than the outside, where there is more surface area for the water to move around (see pic 1). We also engineered the knitting composition so that the moisture is always forced outward towards the face side of the fabric, keeping the skin side as dry as possible while cooling your body naturally through maximum air flow (see pic 2).
Please allow some time for the below videos to load.
The result you get is a turbocharged wicking fabric that just works in the background, because your body deserves to breathe too!
One of the critical requirement we had when developing our fabric was to achieve high stretch without the use of any elastane. Elastane adds unwanted weight and texture to the material and does not provide any other functions other than stretch. After months of testing and development, we managed to develop a unique waffle-like knitting composition that contains a very high stretch to recovery ratio, without adding any elastane. This means a lighter and softer fabric, and better for the planet. You really wouldn't believe it's made entirely out of plastic water bottles!
Another key feature we focused on improving was the seam construction. We wanted a seam that has a better stretch to recovery ratio, than a traditional flatlock. We also wanted to reduce the surface area in which the seam connects with the fabric, to reduce potential irritation (the cause of skin chafing). This all means sourcing a new type of premium thread twisted in a way that provides extra softness and high stretch to recovery ratio, without losing strength. We have also dialed in our Merrow stitch technique that uses less area of the fabric where the seam joins while keeping a flat profile. The result is a seam construction that is engineered to become part of the material- providing a subtle profile, yet strong and soft at the same time. Going backpacking or running has never been so comfortable!
We thought long and hard on this one- on the one hand, we understand why it is important to show our logo, on the other, we don't like big branded logos. And sure enough, we wanted to use the best sustainable methods to do all this too, so we got busy. After months of sourcing and testing, we have perfected a printing technique for our neck label that uses no plastic heat transfers (less weight and waste), prints with surgical precision on all colours (even on black), and stays on the garment permanently, without ever looking like those semi-peeled labels you often find with cheap heat transfers.
Please allow some time for the below clips to load. =)
For the reflective logo print, we often find reflective prints to be too silver and overly bright all the time, even when they're not lit. So we decided to go with a matte version that provides a more subtle reflective effect.
We use 100% Regenerated Polyester even in all our care labels, with added information about the carbon footprint you will save with our shirts. We've also added a dedicated 'Product Transparency' section, where we list out all the materials used down to a tee (no pun intended!). After all, it is called the 'Care Label,' and we want to put that extra Seadon Care back into them.
To ensure The Regenerative Tee genuinely stand the test of time, over the past few months, we sent some of our shirts to different 'outsiders' around the world, asking them to put our shirts through a variety of adventures in all types of conditions- from epic ridgeline hikes to sending boulders to doing yoga (in Alaska!). The people shown in our video are just some of these remarkable people doing what they do best- enjoying the outdoors.
Our funding goal, stretch goals + rewards structure are based on our MCQ (Minimum Colour Quantity) needed for our fabric mill to add 1 extra color to all 4 styles, which comes to HKD $297k (USD $38k) in total. That means we will be able to release a new color in all 4 styles each time we reach HKD $297k (USD $38k) on top of the total funding goal. We decided to cover half of the MCQ internally for our first funding goal, as a way to show our commiment to this project.
We also have other color options and add-ons to offer later on in the campaign, depending on how things are going, so stay tuned! =)
Hey guys, Carson here. I am the founder of Seadon, and this is us in our studio here in Hong Kong. I moved here 2 years ago from the UK to pursue this passion project of mine. Being a huge outdoor guy myself, and watching Nat Geo documentaries and anything from David Attenborough growing up, I increasingly became aware and conscious of our planet's deteriorating health, witnessing the effect of the so-called 'Plastic Age' we are currently experiencing in our generation. Hiking or surfing with plastics around you is just not very nice in general!
I started Seadon because I believe the outdoor industry can do better (a lot better!), regarding having our planet's back. At the end of the day, why can't outdoor gear be functional and sustainable at the same time?
The short(ish) answer is time, money and believe- it takes an incredible amount of time, effort and tenacity to set up and maintain this kind of operation, and a premium is paid throughout the process to have a strict system in place to follow, in order to achieve our standard for high-quality products. We at Seadon believe functional and sustainable outdoor gear is the only way to go, and we ultimately invest what we believe in, which is keeping the outdoors healthy, so we can all enjoy it a little more.
The word 'Seadon' comes from an English name, meaning 'From the Hill, by the Sea.', which pays homage to mother nature and everything it provides. It is one of our core philosophy that we bring forward to every aspect of what we do here- to make high-quality gear, using the best sustainable and ethical practices today, at a fair price.
Being a fresh company brings an invaluable opportunity for us to look at the outdoor industry with a new set of eyes, seeing it in a whole new perspective and vision, and translating this into our products. We hope this humble vision of ours can resonate with you and we thank you for taking the time to check out this campaign.
