This is GoBirding's first Kickstarter, but it's backed by Apexel, a company with 15+ years of experience making optics. They say they've done several rounds of field testing and bought key parts ahead of time. It's also a Kickstarter "Project We Love."
A 900mm scope with 30x optical zoom (120x hybrid), autofocus tracking, and optical stabilization. It can identify over 1,500 bird species with no internet connection, and records 4K photos and video. It weighs under 2 lbs, is water resistant (IP65), and runs for about 6 hours per charge.
They're clear about their data: your bird photos aren't used to train their AI. They state the ID accuracy is about 95% and treat results as a guide, not a guarantee. Sustainability gets only a brief mention.
The Super Early Bird is about $599, compared with a $999 retail price. Bundles with binoculars, a tripod, and a duffel bag run from about $647 to $847. It's a lot of money, but it replaces a scope, a camera, and a bird ID app.
