A couple things to keep in mind. If you are going to offer a price discount (25% off for BackerClub members for example) you need to think through how the members will get this discount. The crowdfunding site will not let them pledge for a lower dollar amount than the reward tier is set at. You could ask BackerClub members to pledge for your $1 Thank You tier but pledge the dollar amount equivalent to the reward they want less 25% (don't forget about shipping). Or, you could choose to send PayPal refunds to users after the campaign is over.
After analyzing hundreds and hundreds of projects that have been featured on BackerClub, here is what we have found about what rewards work the best:
Automatic tier upgrades: “BackerClub members who pledge $29 or more will get an automatic upgrade to the next tier reward beyond what you pledge!”. This is by far the strongest incentive for the members. Projects that have used this sort of an incentive have had over 200% the support from our community as other projects!
Percentage discount: “BackerClub members receive a 20% discount on any pledge!”. This sort of special perk has resulted in a significantly above average level of support.
Free add-on items: “Every BackerClub member who pledges $40 or higher will receive a BackerClub embossed leather iPad sleeve!”. Free add-on items have received a slightly above average response.
Early bird-pricing (when already sold out): “BackerClub members can still get early bird pricing even though it is sold out!”. Special access to sold-out early bird pricing has received a slightly above average response.
Perks that require a very high investment to qualify for tend to get a significantly below average response from the community. “Any BackerClub member who pledges for our super duper industrial pack of 200 units gets a free paperclip with their order!”. :) Seriously, rewards that require a backer to pledge for one of your high level tiers will not get as good of a response. The exception to this is when your standard pledge is a high price tag item (such as a 3D Printer for $499) since the member is already expecting to pay a lot for their standard pledge.
Free shipping: “BackerClub members will get free shipping anywhere in the world!”. This type of incentive has a low draw for most backers and will likely result in a below average amount of support from the Club members.
Also, and this is important, whatever perk you offer will be claimable by all BackerClub members, even ones who have backed your project before you list in the Club. If your project is already live and you have a lot of backers, then there will undoubtedly be some who have already supported your project who are also Club members. Please keep this in consideration as you formulate your plans for a special perk.
The bottom line: the more generous your reward is, the stronger response you can expect from the Club. A super deal will encourage those who might otherwise be on the fence to get in there and pledge. So, be GENEROUS and CREATIVE!
